So... I had this whole Year in Review thing planned out and scheduled and then I go out and shoot what was one of my favorite shows all year. Just this Monday, I covered the final night of Alina Bea's residency at The Bootleg Theater for Grimy Goods. I think this was the first show I've shot for Grimy since April, which is a damn shame since I used to shoot way more frequently, but hey I already wrote about my lack of shooting shows.
Anyways... Alina was gracious enough to allow me to shoot some portraits before doors opened, which is always hit and miss. Knowing that she had a lot to do before doors, I was just grateful for her time. It's been a minute since I've shot at The Bootleg, so I wasn't quite sure what they had to offer for backgrounds. Luckily the whole back stage / green room area has a ton of options and of course I was drawn to the sparkly curtains hanging just outside the dressing room. While I have seen portraits by other photographers shot with the same background, I couldn't resist. I knew I had to approach it a bit differently, so I went with a moodier vibe than I have seen and I am happy with the results.
Lucky for me (and you), I had a fantastic writer, Jamie Lawlor, reviewing the show while I just had to shoot it. The funny thing is how I first came to know Jamie, I was covering a show at The Echo for Grimy Goods and his band, J Laser, were one of the openers. I ended up doing promo photos for them earlier this year (blog post to come), and I hadn't seen him since. Do yourself a favor and check out his words and my images on Grimy Goods HERE!
